The Clean Tech Center Selected as a Top 10 Cleantech Cluster Organization
in the World
Central Upstate New York ranked 2nd nationally, 6th globally as emerging
cleantech region
The Clean Tech Center was selected one of the "Top 10 Cleantech Cluster
Organizations 2010" in a report produced by Sustainable World Capital
for The Cleantech Group. Central Upstate’s Cleantech Center is ranked
second in the U.S. over CleanTech San Diego and The Environmental Business
Cluster in San Jose, California. It was ranked 6th in the world ahead
of Sweden’s Stockholm Miljöteknikcenter, and Canada’s Ontario Clean Water
Initiative.
Shawn Lesser of Sustainable World Capital scoured the world looking
for leading cleantech economic development regions.
The Clean Tech Center made his list of top clusters to watch, "You’ve
heard of the big apple. The green apple is Central Upstate New York. With
38 colleges and universities, 138,000 college students, $2 billion in
annual funded R&D and a green
landscape that supports clean energy production,
NY’s ‘green core’ is launching and growing clean tech enterprises," said
Lesser. "The Clean Tech Center at the Syracuse-based Tech Garden, and
the Syracuse Center of Excellence in Energy and Environmental Systems
are at the forefront of the green innovation movement."
"Our region has more than a century
of leadership in environmental technologies and we
continue to support the growth of next generation clean technologies in
sectors such as biomass, hydro, geothermal, biofuels, and LEED building
design," says Linda Hartsock, executive director, The Clean Tech Center.
"This top ranking puts a spotlight on the collaborative efforts of our
region’s green team and demonstrates to the world that we are a cleantech
force."
"This excellent ranking proves that the Creative Core is a competitive
center of the new industrial revolution," says Ed
Bogucz, executive director, Syracuse Center of Excellence. "Regional green
and clean tech assets such as The Clean Tech Center, SyracuseCoE, and
their many partner businesses and academic institutions offer research
and development capabilities that are turning heads throughout the world."
This isn’t the first time Central Upstate’s cleantech cluster has been
recognized by Lesser. Recently Lesser produced:
- Top
10 cleantech universities for 2010 (Jan. 2010)
which included Cornell University as #8
- Top 10
cleantech countries for 2009 (Oct. 2009) which
included U.S. as #7
- Top 10 U.S. states for cleantech
in 2009 (Aug. 2009) which included New York as
#8, and also referenced the emerging "green apple"
cluster
The region’s cleantech market is expected to grow, with support from
New York State which just adopted a new state energy plan with some of
the most aggressive renewable portfolio standards in the country. State
commitments also include a
$500 million Green Strategic Investment Fund through the State Comptroller’s
Office. The New York Power Authority recently released an RFP for 100MW
of solar production, as well as an RFP for up to 500MW of wind along the
Great Lakes – the largest off-shore freshwater wind farm project in North
America. The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority
(NYSERDA) is one of the best-funded public authorities in the country,
with an annual budget of more than $500 million to support extensive programs
that fund R&D, manufacturing and large-scale energy management and
conservation programs.
