Young Residents Begin Investing their Skills Downtown
Urban
development experts have repeatedly cited the need to attract
young, talented, creative individuals into urban centers as a
means of creating vibrant and revitalized spaces. Many argue
that the existence of this demographic alone will itself attract
high quality employers and therefore additional jobs to struggling
center cities. Recently, downtown Syracuse has been awash by
activities that were initiated by young individuals and were specifically
designed to celebrate downtown Syracuse and attract additional
young people downtown.
In mid-September, the young professional’s
organization, 40 Below, held their annual summit at the Museum
of Science and Technology. The summit provided numerous opportunities
for the over 500 attendees to get engaged with the non-profit
community and learn about sustainable community initiatives.
In addition, the summit channeled the event’s creative energy
into identifying the activities and experiences in Syracuse that
make our city a truly unique place to live. The underlying intent
of these actions was to highlight the diversity of experiences,
lifestyles and opportunities of Syracuse and potentially motivate
attendees to become more involved in the Syracuse community.
An example of young people celebrating what makes downtown a
special environment is the newly formed 7053 Productions company.
7053 recently produced a series of innovative and engaging commercials
for the Downtown Committee of Syracuse that highlight the shopping,
dining and nightlife activities found in downtown. “7053 Productions
was created to skyrocket the quality of commercial advertising
in Central New York,” said Solon Quinn, owner of 7053. “Every
individual that comprises our company was born and raised here.
As sons and daughters of Syracuse, we hope to rattle the cage
and truly showcase what our great city has to offer.”
7053 Productions
is a perfect example of the kind of talent we need to retain
in this community for future prosperity. To better ensure that
our community can, in fact, keep these talented individuals in
our community, the Chamber fully supports the pivotal efforts
of 40 Below, and other organizations, to combat the flight of
bright individuals out of our Upstate communities.

A region and its economy are only as vital and successful as
the city at their core. Great things are happening in the city
of Syracuse…lots of them!
Each month, we will devote this space to news and information
about the Renaissance that is taking place in our city. If you
